AT THE CREEK

We have a small staff at Bear Creek Nature Center, and rely on the many volunteers and community members that help to serve our mission of local wildlife and environmental education. There are many ways for people to connect.

OUR TEAM

Norma Lewis

DIRECTOR, NATURALIST
Norma was inspired toward ecology as a high school student accepted to an internship at the Cincinnati Museum. Since then, she has gained experience and education working in a variety of wildlife and environmental contexts. While known as "the bat lady," Norma is also able to care for reptiles, birds of prey, and mammals. She is excited for BCNC's future as a welcoming place for others to participate in conservation and environmental efforts.

Joanne Wasdin

 EDUCATION & OUTREACH
Joanne was introduced to the world of wildlife as an adult through conservation education. She has worked as both the scientist and the science teacher and aims to be a bridge between the two. Whether art and media or moss and mammal research, she hopes to bring her wide array of skills to excite our community about native wildlife opportunities. She is excited about seeing others notice how awesome our native ecosystems are.

Chance Rankin

COMMUNICATIONS
Chance has explored nature since a young age with two parents that work in ecology fields. He manages many behind-the-scenes efforts at BCNC, and even sneaks in time to hang with the bats. He is currently looking to pursue graduate studies in biology with a particular interest in the cross-section of physics, math, and biology through the field of biomechanics. He is excited to see our group of volunteers and supporters grow.

Where are they now?

Below you will find some highlights of past staff and volunteers who have gone on to new phases in life, but are still an important part of the story of Bear Creek Nature Center. Many still come by to volunteer when able or give our animal residents a visit.
  • Beth H., Assistant Naturalist - Retired in 2021.
  • Thalia Y., Volunteer - Studying veterinary medicine in Edinburgh, Scotland
  • Oran H., Volunteer - Studying Forestry at the University of Georgia
